Our Communities

Bayulu

Bayulu is one of the oldest, most established communities. Bayulu is located on the western periphery of Gooniyandi country. There is a strong influence of mostly Gooniyandi and Walmajarri speakers in the community. Smaller communities have developed from Bayulu.

It is a large Aboriginal community, located 10 km south of Fitzroy Crossing in the Kimberley Region of Western Australia, within the Shire of Derby-West Kimberley.

Bayulu was originally established as part of Gogo Station but was relocated to its current position in 1987.

Children of school age at Bayulu attend Bayulu Community School located on Gogo Station. It caters for 125. Their first language is Kriol with some Gooniyandi and Walmajarri being spoken. Standard Australian English is the children’s second language.

Our communities are alive and full of stories about how they came to be and why that place in country is important for health and culture.
